The Nalanda Translation Committee is pleased to announce that we have completed a new edition of the Avalokiteshvara terma sadhana that the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche discovered in Tibet. Over the last few years we have had some rare and precious opportunities to continue our work with Surmang Khenpo and Karma Senge Rinpoche, the Vidyadhara’s nephew, to complete these translations and expand on their commentaries.
In 2007, Karma Senge Rinpoche bestowed the abhisheka of this ati sadhana of Avalokiteshvara on 500 students in Canada. Since that time, many other students have received the lung (reading transmission) and permission to practice this in groups. Now Karma Senge Rinpoche has given his permission for those who have received the lung to receive the sadhana text for study at home.
The complete sadhana, now nicely printed with a hard cover, is twice as long as the original edition. It includes all the liturgies for feast practice: a lineage supplication, preliminaries, protector chants, condensed feast offering, and an aspiration—all termas and writings of the Vidyadhara.
The new Practice Manual (three times larger than the first edition) contains expanded instructions and new commentaries on all of the practice texts, an expanded “Teachings” section that includes talks by Karma Senge Rinpoche, the Vidyadhara, and other great ati masters. A torma manual with 18 illustrations is included for the first time.
Under Karma Senge Rinpoche’s direction, we commissioned two thangkas for this practice. High-quality photos of these are now available. One is of Avalokiteshvara for the main practice, the other is for the guru-yoga section of the preliminaries (part of the ngöndro text for the Vidyadhara’s termas). This latter one is similar to the Guru Yoga of Dharma Sagara.
We offer these to enrich our practice of this precious heart treasure of the Vidyadhara.
